A video circulating on X shows Vice President JD Vance publicly calling out Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, saying she made a mistake in the recent birthright citizenship ruling and questioning whether that is what the framers of the 14th Amendment had in mind for children of illegal immigrants or tourists. In the clip posted by Eric Daugherty on X, Vance responds to a reporter's question about conservative backlash against Barrett following the Court's June 30 decision in Trump v. Barbara, in which she joined the majority upholding birthright citizenship.
"Do I think she made a mistake in the ruling? I do!" Vance states. "I don't know how ANYBODY can say that if a person who is an illegal alien or a person, for example, who's pregnant and comes to the United States on a vacation, they have a baby and all of a sudden their entire family gets the benefits of American citizenship?!"
He continued: "I DON'T think that's what the framers of the 14th Amendment had in mind. I don't think it's the right case." Vance concluded: "But look, it was 5-4. Sometimes the Supreme Court makes mistakes. We're going to try to correct that mistake, but nobody's perfect, including the Supreme Court." The remarks refer to the Supreme Court’s June 30, 2026, decision in Trump v. Barbara, in which Barrett joined the majority upholding a broad application of birthright citizenship.
